San Gimignano is an ancient town of medieval origin, also known as the "Manhattan of the Middle Ages" because of the many towers that were once present in the city. For the nobles, in fact, building a tall tower meant to show economic power and social importance. In the period of maximum splendor, there were 65 towers in San Gimignano, but unfortunately there are only 13 left standing, but they still make the town’s profile particularly impressive. The highest, the Torre del Podestà, is open to the public and allows to admire the old town from a unique perspective.
Do not miss in San Gimignano is a visit to the cathedral, considered one of the most prestigious in Tuscany. In its three naves there are many Florentine fresco paintings painted by several artists including Benozzo Gozzoli and Domenico Ghirlandaio. Also interesting is the Palazzo Comunale, now home to the Civic Museum and the local art gallery where you can admire masterpieces by Pier Francesco Fiorentino, Filippino Lippi, Pinturicchio and many others.
In the countryside of San Gimignano is produced the famous Vernaccia, white wine with a dry taste and a typical straw yellow color.
